Ronald McDonald House Parkville is a not for profit accommodation facility that provides a home away from home for families who have children being treated for life threatening illnesses. The House opened in 1986 with the generous support and commitment of the Royal Childrens Hospital, McDonalds Australia and various corporate and community supporters. Extensive renovations were required to transform four Victorian terrace houses, which were built in the 1800s, into a home away from home. They have continued to grow over the years and now occupy 10 terrace houses in Gatehouse Street. At the start of February 2007 they have accommodated over 295,800 nightly guests since 1986.
