South Melbourne, where the Parish of Sts. Peter and Paul is situated, was a traditional social and ceremonial meeting place for a number of Aboriginal tribes. When gold was discovered in Victoria, fortune seekers flocked to a tent city which had been erected in South Melbourne - this was known as Canvas Town. 'We now have our own Canvas Town, or Tent City, in the grounds of my church' says Father Bob Maguire, 'we are hoping to alert people to the despair and lack of resources our clients live with. The homeless, the lost, the tired and hungry - can all pass through Tent City to the back of the Parish House and be nourished in body and soul.'

Cancer Council provides special support for carers

Unpaid carers, family and friends of people with cancer are urged to attend the Cancer Council's first Carer's Forum on Saturday May 10, 2008. With 66 Victorians diagnosed with cancer every day, few Victorian families have not been touched in some way. This interactive forum is an opportunity for unpaid carers, family and friends to share experiences and discuss many of the issues carers may face. Topics include: what happens when the carer has cancer, self-care and support services available.

Ba Futuru - Transformation Through The Arts

Ba Futuru is calling for donations to provide therapeutic activities to help the internally displaced persons and people living in high-conflict areas to cope with the fear, loss and grief and learn conflict resolution skills for the future.
